What is Asbestos Removal and Why is it Necessary?

Historically, because of its fire-resistant and excellent insulation properties, asbestos was frequently used in the construction industry and many other fields. This naturally occurring fibrous silicate material was fully banned for all uses once it was determined that inhaling the fibres posed a major health hazard and might be the root cause of diseases like mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.

From the 1930s, asbestos was largely used across the UK, with the 1960s and 1970s being particularly prevalent for its use. However, the total prohibition of asbestos in all its forms did not take effect until 1999, so it’s possible that asbestos in one form or another was used in many homes, businesses, and schools constructed right up until the year 2000.

In addition to our asbestos surveying and testing services, we offer professional, secure encapsulation, removal, and disposal services for all types of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) from your premises. Our asbestos removal engineers are fully licenced in the safe removal of hazardous asbestos materials in public, private and household settings. We strictly abide by the criteria specified in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

High Quality Removal and Disposal of all Types of Asbestos

There are several distinct types of asbestos, which many people are not aware of. At various stages during the 1980s and 1990s, they were all banned. Three main types of asbestos can be found in the UK:

  • Blue Asbestos (sometimes known as Crocidolite)
  • Brown Asbestos (sometimes known as Amosite)
  • White Asbestos (sometimes known as Chrysotile)

It has long been established that asbestos exposure at high levels can lead to serious diseases, including mesothelioma and lung cancer. Asbestos is still linked to thousands of fatalities each year, which is especially concerning as symptoms may take ten years or longer to manifest. Asbestos must therefore be actively hunted down and removed, or otherwise made safe.

At DES Holdings, we specialise in the complete asbestos removal process, including testing, encapsulation, safe removal and disposal. Encapsulation is the process of asbestos-containing material (ACM) being left in place while being completely covered with a durable, protective coating.

Our fully qualified and equipped professionals will dispose of removed asbestos safely and securely. ACM will be wrapped and double-bagged before being either disposed of in a covered asbestos skip at an authorised hazardous waste centre or, for smaller amounts, transported to an asbestos waste transfer station in our vehicle’s segregated waste box.

Anybody who improperly disposes of asbestos faces steep fines, legal action, and perhaps even prison time. If you believe your business or property may have an asbestos problem, call on the certified, licenced asbestos removal specialists in Bristol at DES Holdings.

Asbestos surveys for Bristol properties

Finding out whether a property has an asbestos problem and how much asbestos-containing material (ACM) is present is the goal of an asbestos management survey. We perform asbestos inspections for leaseholders, freeholders, and commercial and industrial premises in Ipswich.

Our asbestos surveys are fully compliant with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, Part 2, Regulation 4, ‘duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises’. Those in charge of managing a property have a duty to actively seek out any ACM that may be present and to safely deal with any issues in the interests of public health.

Where necessary, this survey also endeavours to ensure that nobody mistakenly disturbs asbestos, that the ACM encapsulation is maintained in top condition, and that no one is adversely affected by prolonged ACM presence.

If removal is not an option, we can also encapsulate asbestos in Bristol

Rather than removing all ACM from the property, sometimes it can be necessary to instead carry out an asbestos encapsulation. When transferring ACM is too dangerous or impractical, asbestos encapsulation is a good option. Encapsulation completely encloses the asbestos, allowing the ACM to stay where it is while still eliminating any further health risks.

Using the encapsulation option rather than complete removal will go some way towards reducing the potentially very disruptive asbestos removal process. It can be finished quickly and effectively, all while causing the least amount of disruption possible
